Description
B7-1, also known as cluster of differentiation 80 (CD80), is a cell surface glycoprotein expressed on antigen-presenting cells (APCs) and plays a crucial role in regulating adaptive immune responses. As co-stimulatory molecule, B7-1 binds to CD28 expressed on the surface of T cells and thereby, provides a second signal that is inevitable for T cell activation, proliferation and differentiation into effector and memory T cells. Inhibitory signals induced by interaction of B7-1 with the cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4) limit initial T cell activation in secondary lymphoid organs in order to prevent excessive immune stimulation. Modulating the B7-1/CD28 and B7-1/CTLA-4 interactions can have significant effects on immune responses and thus, represents a promising strategy to treat various autoimmune diseases and cancer.
