Elastases
Elastases are proteolytic enzymes (serine proteases) that break down elastin, an elastic fiber found in connective tissues. They are produced by various cell types, including neutrophils and pancreatic cells, and play essential roles in tissue remodeling, inflammation, and immune defense. Dysregulated elastase activity is associated with diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis, and tissue damage.
