Description

Interleukin-4 (IL-4) is a pleiotropic cytokine that is produced by various cell types, such as activated mast cells and eosinophils, in response to helminthic infections and allergic reactions. Production of IL-4 leads to differentiation of naïve T cells into effector T helper 2 (Th2) cells, thereby promoting humoral immune responses. Furthermore, IL-4 facilitates tissue repair by activation of macrophages that produce cytokines inhibiting inflammation and inducing fibroblast proliferation, collagen synthesis and angiogenesis. Due to its pivotal role in allergic inflammatory responses, it is of great interest to develop effective therapeutics targeting IL-4 signaling pathways.
